Brand Kit Asset Synchronization and Deletion Behavior

Canva Brand Kits enable administrators to centralize logos, color palettes, and fonts to maintain organizational consistency across a team. When assets are updated within the Brand Kit, changes typically propagate to linked elements in existing designs to ensure visual alignment.
However, the behavior regarding asset removal remains unclear. While updating a logo synchronizes the change, deleting an asset from the Brand Kit may impact legacy designs that rely on those specific resources.
Does deleting a logo or color from the Brand Kit automatically remove the element from all previously saved designs, or does the asset persist in those designs as a static object? If the asset is removed, is there a mechanism to prevent broken links in legacy templates?
When a logo, color, or font is removed from the Brand Kit, the deletion is propagated to all projects that use the kit, but only the link to that asset is removed. The actual file or color value that was embedded in a design at the time of its last save remains in that design as a static object. Therefore, legacy designs do not break – they simply no longer reflect the Brand Kit’s current state.
Because the asset file is not physically removed from a project’s file store, any design that already contains the asset continues to display it. The only side effect is that subsequent edits that rely on the Brand Kit will not be able to pull that asset again. No broken‑link errors appear in the editor.
Some implementations may immediately delete the file from all projects. In that case, legacy designs that reference the asset will display a placeholder or an error. If you encounter this, you’ll need to replace the missing asset manually or restore it from a backup.
Does your system use a soft‑delete (trash/archive) mechanism for Brand Kit assets, or is it a hard‑delete that removes files immediately? Knowing this will determine whether a simple restore can recover the asset for legacy designs.

When an asset is deleted from a Brand Kit, the reference to that asset is stripped from the design’s asset panel, but any instance already placed on the canvas remains as an embedded copy. This copy travels with the design when it is duplicated, saved as a template, or exported, so downstream files retain the visual even though they can no longer pull updates from the Kit. To re‑establish the link, you must manually replace the embedded copy with a new asset from the Kit; simply re‑adding the same‑named file to the Kit will not auto‑relink existing instances.
