Auto Backup asset path persistence and external reference integrity

The 3ds Max Auto Backup feature periodically saves snapshots of the current scene to a local directory to prevent data loss. While these binary .max files preserve internal scene geometry and modifiers, the restoration process relies heavily on the stability of external file paths for textures, XRefs, and linked assets.
When restoring a scene from an autobackup file after a system migration or a change in the project directory structure, the Asset Tracking system may fail to resolve paths that were absolute at the time of the backup. This creates a dependency between the backup's utility and the exact state of the file system at the moment of the snapshot.

3ds Max does not provide a specific mechanism to force relative pathing exclusively for Auto Backup files. The software treats autobackups as standard .max snapshots; they inherit the pathing logic (absolute vs. relative) defined in the global Customize > Configure Project Paths settings at the time the backup was triggered.
When merging a backup file into a scene with a different root directory, 3ds Max follows a standard search hierarchy to resolve XRef links. If the absolute path stored in the backup file is invalid, the system attempts to locate the asset using the current project's configured paths. If the asset is not found in these predefined folders, the link is marked as Missing in the Asset Tracking Toggle (Shift+T).
To resolve broken references after a system migration or directory change, use the following scoped approach:
Shift + T to identify all missing assets.File > Project > Set Project Folder to prevent future absolute pathing conflicts. This behavior is consistent across recent versions of 3ds Max (2020–2025). It is assumed that the user is utilizing the standard Asset Tracking system rather than third-party asset management plugins, which may override default path resolution logic.
Diagnostic Detail Required: Are you utilizing a Network Project folder or a local directory for your primary project settings? This determines whether 3ds Max prioritizes UNC paths over mapped drive letters during the resolution process.

To clarify the relationship between the Project Folder and path persistence: 3ds Max does not retroactively convert absolute paths to relative ones simply by changing the project folder after a file is opened. If a backup was saved while the project was unset or pointed to a specific local drive, those absolute paths remain embedded in the binary .max file.
For those managing backups across multiple workstations, it is critical to verify the Configure Project Paths settings before the first save of a session. If the project is correctly defined, 3ds Max uses the project root as the anchor for relative paths, which significantly reduces the manual re-pathing required in the Asset Tracking Toggle when restoring a backup on a different machine with an identical folder structure.
