Auto Backup Interval Behavior During Long-Running Tasks

Auto Backup Configuration
3ds Max’s Auto Backup periodically saves copies of the currently open scene to a user‑configurable directory. The settings live under Customize > Preferences > Files and can be overridden via the 3dsmax.ini file. The mechanism is intended to protect against crashes, but its interaction with long‑running modal operations (e.g., a production render or a simulation) is not fully documented.
When a modal task occupies the main thread, the Auto Backup timer may fire while the task is still executing. In some releases this results in a stalled or extremely slow save, while in others the backup is deferred until the task completes. The exact behavior appears to depend on the 3ds Max version, installed plugins, and the nature of the task.
Because the user cannot currently specify a policy for this scenario, designers and power users face uncertainty about whether their backup strategy will provide reliable protection during heavy workflows.
Key questions remain:
- Does Auto Backup pause automatically when a modal task such as rendering is in progress, or does it attempt to write a backup during that time?
- If it writes during a modal task, what happens if the task holds the main thread and the backup stalls or fails?
- Is there a configuration option to defer Auto Backup until after the modal task completes?
