Will Emacs change the default C-x C-f binding to a project-aware file finder?

I use find-file via C-x C-f constantly, and I have seen discussion on emacs-devel about possibly making the default file-finding command project-aware in a future release, rather than relying on users to bind something like project-find-file themselves.
My uncertainty is about the scope of what is actually being considered: would this be a change to the default global binding, a new user option, or just stronger encouragement in documentation? I also cannot tell whether any decision has been reached or whether the thread is still open, since the discussion seems to span multiple release cycles.
I am on Emacs 29.1, where C-x C-f still invokes plain find-file, and I want to know whether building muscle memory and config around the current behavior is safe.
C-x C-f to be project-aware?31775 reputation · 23 Jun 2025, 19:50 UTC
No. As of Emacs 29.1 and the current development branch (targeting Emacs 30), C-x C-f remains bound to find-file with no project-aware behavior. The maintainers have not reached a decision to change this binding, and any such change would require a major release with an explicit opt-in defcustom and a NEWS entry.
C-x C-f → find-file (verified in emacs -Q on 29.1 and master).project-find-file bound to C-x p f since Emacs 28.find-file-use-project-aware).defcustom would gate the new behavior (defaulting to nil).etc/NEWS for a major release (Emacs 31+).Customize or init file; existing muscle memory would be unaffected by default.https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/ — search for "project-aware find-file" or "C-x C-f project".https://debbugs.gnu.org/ under the emacs package.etc/NEWS in the Emacs git repository (git.savannah.gnu.org/git/emacs.git).Building config and muscle memory around plain find-file on C-x C-f is safe for the foreseeable future. If you want project-aware finding today, bind project-find-file to a key you prefer (e.g., C-c p f) or use the existing C-x p f.
In a fresh emacs -Q session, run C-h k C-x C-f and confirm the help buffer shows find-file. If it shows something else, a third-party package (projectile, consult, vertico, etc.) has rebound the key in your init — check your config and package documentation.
