GPU Performance Checkbox Greyed Out and Reverting to CPU Preview in Illustrator

GPU Performance toggle unavailable in Preferences
My goal is to keep Illustrator rendering the canvas with GPU acceleration (OpenGL or Metal, depending on platform) so that zooming and panning complex vector artwork stays responsive. In Preferences > Performance, the GPU Performance option is either greyed out or appears to revert, and the status bar shows CPU Preview instead of GPU Preview.
I understand from the documented behavior that Illustrator can automatically fall back to CPU-based rendering when the installed graphics driver is considered outdated or incompatible, and that this decision depends heavily on the specific driver version on the host OS. What is unclear is how Illustrator makes that compatibility determination at launch, and whether the fallback is supposed to be persistent across sessions or re-evaluated each time the application starts.
There also seems to be an unresolved question about consistency on multi-GPU systems (for example, a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics): which adapter Illustrator binds to, and whether the OS-level GPU assignment influences the availability of the checkbox.
Assuming a recent Illustrator version on a supported OS:
- What specific driver or hardware criteria cause Illustrator to disable GPU Performance and force CPU Preview?
- Is the automatic fallback to CPU mode re-evaluated on every launch, or is it cached until preferences are reset?
- On dual-GPU systems, how does Illustrator select which adapter to use for GPU Preview?
