Failed to load user configuration file – Inkscape configuration loader

When upgrading to a new major release of Inkscape, the application may abort with the message "Failed to load user configuration file". The loader searches for the legacy configuration directory (e.g., ~/.config/inkscape on Linux or %APPDATA%\Inkscape on Windows) and cannot locate it, causing the launch to fail.
Documentation recommends simply deleting the old configuration directory so that the installer can recreate a fresh defaults set. This restores the core UI and preferences but discards any custom UI themes or user‑defined settings.
During this upgrade path the loader does not back up or migrate user‑installed extensions located in the extensions sub‑folder. Users lose custom functionality unless they manually copy the files before upgrading.

It is important to note that Inkscape does not currently perform automated migration or backup of user-installed extensions during these upgrades. If the loader triggers a reset, any custom functionality stored in the extensions sub-folder may be lost unless manually preserved.
To restore functionality, you must allow Inkscape to generate a fresh configuration set. Follow these steps to reset the application:
extensions sub-folder to a safe location.%APPDATA%\Inkscape~/Library/Application Support/Inkscape~/.config/inkscapeinkscape folder (or rename it to inkscape_old to keep a reference for later).Once the application launches successfully, you will need to manually re-configure your UI themes and user-defined hotkeys. To restore your custom tools, move your previously backed-up files back into the newly created extensions directory.
Note: If the error persists after deletion, verify your file system permissions for the target directory. There is currently no known configuration flag or installer option to preserve legacy files without manual intervention, as the loader is designed to prioritize a clean state during major transitions.p>
