Use Vagrant’s NFS synced folder to boost file‑system performance on macOS/Linux hosts. Follow this guide for a working Vagrantfile, platform prerequisites, common pitfalls, and verification steps.
A concise architecture note covering requirements, minimal design, trust boundaries, checks, failures, and when to switch Vagrant synced‑folder providers.
Pick the right Vagrant synced folder for your project. Compare VirtualBox shared folders, NFS, and rsync, and learn how to set up, test, and troubleshoot each type in a local development environment.
When a developer runs a framework that touches thousands of tiny files — think npm install, Composer dump‑autoload, or asset compilation — the default VirtualBox shared folder becomes a bottleneck.
Vagrant's default synced folder is slow for file-heavy work. Compare NFS, rsync, SMB, and VirtualBox shared folders by host OS, sync direction, and performance — then configure and verify NFS.
Learn how to enable Vagrant NFS synced folders for faster host‑guest file synchronization, with a sample Vagrantfile, performance notes, and pitfalls to avoid.
Goal: Ensure that Vagrant notifies users when the automatically selected synced folder implementation cannot be used because required host‑side dependencies (e.g., NFS client, SMB services) are absent, causing a silent fallback to VirtualBox shared folders and potential performance loss. Constraints: Vagrant’s built‑in selection chooses NFS on macOS/Linux, S
Goal To understand how the default synced‑folder type in Vagrant 2.x changes when switching providers and what explicit configuration is required to maintain consistent behavior. Constraints Vagrantfile must use config version 2 – mixing version 1 and 2 is unsupported. Different providers (VirtualBox, NFS, SMB, rsync) apply distinct default sync mechanisms.
Goal Ensure a stable synced folder for a Vagrant VM running on a Windows host, using NFS for performance while avoiding silent mount failures. Constraints NFS provisioner on Windows may silently fail when the Windows NFS client or firewall is misconfigured. Vagrant documentation does not specify a fallback to VirtualBox shared folders when NFS fails. Mount a
