Managing Equation Numbers and Cross-References in LaTeX
LaTeX's automatic equation numbering and cross-referencing system requires proper label placement and multiple compilation passes to work correctly. Labels must appear after the element they reference, and you need at least two pdflatex runs to resolve all references.
