Mahindra launched the updated three-door Thar — now called the Mahindra Thar OG — on 22 September 2026, with introductory ex-showroom prices from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh. Within 24 hours, Google Trends India recorded roughly 10,000 searches for "thar og on road price", a 400% jump, as buyers tried to work out the real out-the-door bill. The short answer: depending on your city, expect to pay roughly Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 23.07 lakh on road — because registration, road tax and insurance add a substantial amount to the headline figure.
Thar OG ex-showroom price: the variant ladder
As reported by CarDekho and CarWale, the OG Thar is sold in AXT, LXT and ZXT trims across 15 variants. All launch prices are introductory and ex-showroom:
- AXT (base): Rs 10.32 lakh — 1.5-litre diesel, manual, rear-wheel drive only
- LXT: Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 18 lakh
- ZXT (top): Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh
- Automatic variants: start at Rs 14.77 lakh
Three engines are on offer: a 1.5-litre diesel (119 PS, RWD only), a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol (162 PS) and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel (152 PS). Notably, Mahindra is offering the larger 2.2-litre diesel in a rear-wheel-drive automatic guise for the first time, alongside the familiar 4WD options.
What "on road" actually adds
The ex-showroom price is only the starting point. The on-road price includes state road tax and RTO registration, one-year (or bundled multi-year) insurance, and small handling or FASTag-type charges. CarWale's Mumbai estimate for the base AXT illustrates the gap: on top of the Rs 10.32 lakh ex-showroom price, it adds Rs 1,55,529 in registration, Rs 52,003 in insurance and Rs 500 in additional charges — pushing the bill close to Rs 12.4 lakh. For the top ZXT at Rs 18.99 lakh, the same listing estimates Rs 2,83,417 registration and Rs 1,04,683 insurance, taking the Mumbai on-road figure to about Rs 23.07 lakh.
As of October 2026, CarWale pegs the Thar OG's on-road price in Mumbai at Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 23.07 lakh. Treat this as one city's example, not a national rate — road tax slabs differ sharply between states, so the same variant can cost noticeably less in, say, Delhi or Chandigarh than in Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Why the price varies by city — and how to check yours
Two buyers booking the identical ZXT 4WD automatic can end up with bills a lakh or more apart purely because of where they register the car. Road tax is a percentage of vehicle cost set by each state, insurance premiums vary with insurer and add-on covers, and some cities levy extra municipal charges. Before booking, use Mahindra's online configurator or ask a dealer for a written on-road quotation for your registration city, and compare insurance quotes rather than defaulting to the dealer's bundled policy. Also remember these are introductory prices — Mahindra can revise them, so confirm the current rate at booking time.
What the OG update brings for the money
The premium over the outgoing Thar buys meaningful kit. Safety gets the biggest upgrade: six airbags are now standard, up from two, along with front parking sensors and all-wheel disc brakes. The design borrows LED projector headlamps from the Thar Roxx, adds a five-slat grille with 'Thar' badging and new 19-inch dual-tone alloys. Mechanically, the OG Thar gains DaVinci frequency-dependent dampers, electric power steering, terrain modes (Sand, Snow, Mud) and an electronic locking differential on 4WD versions. Two new colours — Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue — join the palette. Rivals in the same price band include the Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny.
The search spike around 22–23 September 2026 has since cooled, but the pricing question remains live for anyone weighing a booking. Budget roughly 20% above the ex-showroom figure as a working rule, then pin down your city-specific quote before signing.
