Workbench 2024 R2 project schema upgrade: is there any supported rollback path to 2023 R2?

ANSYS Workbench increments its project file schema with each major release and offers a forward-only upgrade path. After upgrading a project from 2023 R2 to the 2024 R2 schema, opening that file in the older release appears to produce only a compatibility warning, with newer-schema objects potentially dropped or loading as a partial subset.
The goal is to determine whether a safe, supported rollback exists after a schema change, or whether the only reliable protection is retaining a pre-upgrade backup. The uncertainty is practical: some projects reportedly open in older versions when they use only features present in the older schema, but there is no documented way to know in advance which components will survive, fail loudly, or be silently removed.
Assume Workbench 2023 R2 and 2024 R2 on Windows, Mechanical and Fluent systems in the project, and no third-party customization.
- Does ANSYS document any supported downgrade or rollback mechanism for a project saved under a newer schema version?
- When an older release opens a newer-schema project, is there a log or report identifying which objects or settings were dropped?
- Is schema compatibility checked per system or per project, so a mixed project could be partially rolled back safely?
