Will New Relic add a test‑mode flag to its agents for isolating test data?

The goal is to ascertain whether New Relic intends to introduce a test‑mode capability within its agents that would automatically separate test telemetry from production data without requiring users to maintain distinct accounts or license keys. Currently, data isolation depends entirely on using separate account identifiers, and no built‑in flag exists to mark incoming events as test‑only.
This leaves an unresolved decision about the roadmap for such a feature and how it would coexist with the existing account‑based segregation model. Is a test‑mode flag under consideration for future agent releases? If introduced, how would it interact with the current requirement to use separate account IDs or license keys for data isolation?

No, New Relic does not currently provide a native test‑mode flag in its agents that would automatically separate test telemetry from production data within a single account. The platform’s architecture relies on the License Key as the primary routing identifier, and all telemetry sent with a given key is delivered to the same account.
Because data isolation is enforced server‑side based on the ingest key, a simple client‑side flag cannot create a separate storage bucket. If a future version were to introduce a test‑mode flag, it would most likely act as a metadata tag rather than a routing instruction, and it would not replace the need for distinct license keys when full isolation is required.

As of the current Java agent (8.x) and .NET agent (10.x) releases, there is no built‑in test‑mode flag that routes telemetry to a separate bucket; isolation still depends on the license key or account ID.
You can add a custom attribute such as environment=test to spans, metrics or events and then filter it out in NRQL (WHERE environment != 'test') or dashboard filters. This keeps test data visible for troubleshooting but does not reduce ingestion or billing unless you also disable the corresponding data sources in the agent config (e.g., transaction_tracer.enabled:false).
