Which Illustrator export path suits multi-scale assets: Asset Export panel or legacy slices?

Interface graphics built in Adobe Illustrator often need to ship as PNG or SVG at multiple densities (1x, 2x, 3x) for responsive layouts. The Asset Export panel and the Export for Screens dialog apply scale factors that derive output pixel dimensions from the selected asset, while the older slice-based workflow exports fixed rectangular boundaries drawn in the artwork.
The unresolved decision is which mechanism to standardize on. Asset-based exporting treats a group as a single unit, whereas slices follow predefined boundary boxes regardless of grouping, so the same artwork can yield different output geometry. It is also unclear how each path behaves at higher scale factors for raster formats, where output size can grow sharply, and whether SVG styling and decimal-precision settings introduce alignment shifts across rendering engines.
Which export path is the better default for multi-density deliverables, and how do scale factors interact with grouped assets versus slice boundaries? Does the choice change when SVG rather than PNG is the target format? Do these behaviors hold consistently across recent Illustrator releases?
