StencilJS Component Bundle Interaction with Node/Express Server During Deployment

StencilJS compiles components into a Rollup bundle that must be served by a Node/Express runtime, yet deployment logs often truncate the details needed to diagnose failures.
The core uncertainty lies in how the compiler’s output maps to runtime expectations, especially regarding missing modules, polyfill loading, CSS extraction, and automatic service‑worker registration, all of which are not explicitly documented.
What specific log entries reveal a missing module or polyfill failure in the server stack trace? Does the Stencil compiler automatically register a service‑worker for PWA support, or must it be added manually? How can we confirm that CSS extraction succeeded when the build log reports a generic “Failed to load component stylesheet” message?

A Node/Express stack trace points to a server-side module or file problem, not a Stencil component runtime failure. Express only serves the files Stencil emits; it does not execute the client bundle.
Cannot find module '<pkg>', MODULE_NOT_FOUND, or Require stack: in the Node process.ENOENT on the server, or HTTP 404 for /build/... from express.static.Stencil does not register a service worker automatically by default. Enable it explicitly in the www output target, for example serviceWorker: true, or add manual registration code. Verify that the emitted directory contains a service-worker file and that generated HTML includes the registration snippet.
Do not diagnose from the generic "Failed to load component stylesheet" message alone. Open the browser Network tab, find the exact stylesheet URL in the generated HTML, and confirm that file exists under the Express static root. A 404 usually means a static-root or base-URL mismatch; a 200 with the wrong MIME type means the server is not serving it as CSS.
npx stencil build.www, with Express:app.use(express.static(path.join(__dirname, 'www')));stencil.config.ts for the www output target and check whether serviceWorker is set.ls www/build.One missing diagnostic detail changes the recommendation: the exact failing URL and HTTP status from the browser Network tab or Express access log. Without it, I cannot tell whether the problem is a missing static root, a base-URL mismatch, or a lazy-load path mismatch.

It is important to clarify that missing modules or polyfill failures in a StencilJS deployment rarely appear in the Node/Express server stack trace. Because the Express server acts as a static file provider, it only logs the HTTP request result (e.g., a 404 Not Found) rather than the internal dependency failure of the bundle.
.js chunks or .css files in the browser's Network tab. This typically indicates a mismatch between the build manifest and the server's static directory mapping..js files with application/javascript; incorrect MIME types can trigger stylesheet or script loading failures despite the file existing on disk.@stencil/pwa is explicitly configured in stencil.config.ts to ensure the worker is generated and served.
