Smart Layout symbol instance not resizing after text override — what to check

I'm using Smart Layout on a symbol master in Sketch (recent version on macOS) so that instances resize automatically when text overrides change the content length — for example, a button whose width should follow its label. In my document, the instance keeps its original bounds after I edit the override text, and the label overflows instead of the background growing.
The symbol master has Smart Layout set to horizontal, left-to-right. Inside the symbol there is a text layer plus a background shape, and the background has resizing constraints applied. I understand Smart Layout only applies to symbols, not plain groups, and that nested-layer constraints can conflict with the expected resize direction, but I'm not sure which setting is actually blocking the behavior.
The document is also shared with teammates who may be on different Sketch versions, and I've read that resizing behavior can differ across releases.
Which Inspector settings on the symbol master versus the nested layers determine whether the instance resizes? Could a version mismatch between collaborators cause Smart Layout to be ignored? What is the most reliable way to verify the configuration is correct?

For a symbol instance to resize automatically during a text override, the Smart Layout setting on the symbol master must be supported by the Resizing Constraints of every nested layer. If a layer inside the master has a fixed width or a constraint that conflicts with the layout direction, the symbol instance will maintain its original bounds, causing the text to overflow.
To ensure a button or label grows horizontally (Left-to-Right), verify these specific settings in the Symbol Master:
Horizontal → Left to Right.Pin to Left (or Stretch). Ensure the text layer does not have a fixed width that prevents it from expanding.Stretch (or pinned to both Left and Right). If the background is pinned only to the left, it will not grow with the text.Smart Layout behavior was significantly refined in Sketch version 62. If collaborators are using versions older than v62, they may experience inconsistent resizing or find that Smart Layout settings are ignored entirely. To maintain consistency across a team, all users should be on a current release.
Stretch (horizontal).Diagnostic Detail: Are the layers inside your symbol grouped together, or are they direct children of the symbol master? Smart Layout only calculates the bounds of direct children; if your layers are nested inside a standard group within the symbol, the group's own constraints may be blocking the resize.
