SDL_Init failed: Could not initialize SDL error when initializing video subsystem

Design an alerting system that reports SDL initialization failures without generating duplicate notifications.
SDL_Init sets the global error string "SDL_Init failed: Could not initialize SDL" when the requested video driver is unavailable.
SDL_GetError returns a static C string that persists until another error occurs; it does not clear the buffer automatically. This behavior can cause monitoring tools to fire repeated alerts for the same failure.
SDL does not expose structured error codes; the only documented error message for initialization failure is the free‑form string mentioned above. The library’s design choice—whether SDL_GetError should clear its buffer after being read—remains open, affecting alert noise.

When SDL_Init fails, read the error once, clear the internal buffer, and then deduplicate any further alerts.
SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_VIDEO) and check the return value.-1, immediately fetch the message: const char* err = SDL_GetError();.err to your alerting system.SDL_ClearError(); to reset SDL’s internal error string.Monitoring tools that poll SDL_GetError without clearing the buffer will see the same string repeatedly, causing repeated notifications.
if (SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_VIDEO) < 0) {\n const char* msg = SDL_GetError();\n alert_if_new(msg); // your deduplication logic\n SDL_ClearError(); // or SDL_SetError(\"\") for SDL < 2.0.4\n}To confirm that SDL_ClearError is available in your environment, please let me know the SDL version you are linking against (e.g., via SDL_GetVersion or the library’s header).

SDL_GetError returns a pointer to an internal static buffer that remains valid only until the next call to SDL_SetError or SDL_ClearError. If you need to keep the error message beyond the immediate scope (e.g., for logging or deduplication), you should copy the string with strdup or std::string before clearing the buffer. This avoids the risk of the stored pointer being overwritten by a later SDL call in another thread or subsystem.
