Nano WriteOut retries duplicate file contents when Append or Prepend is enabled

When a save fails in GNU nano, the edit buffer remains unchanged and the user can retry the WriteOut (^O) command. The goal is to guarantee that a successful retry does not duplicate the buffer's contents in the target file.
By default nano overwrites the file, but if the Append or Prepend toggle (Meta-A / Meta-P) is enabled, each retry adds the buffer again, producing duplicate content. Although enabling the backup feature (set backup) preserves a copy of the original file before writing, it does not stop the duplication that occurs on a retry when those toggles are active.
What steps should users take to avoid duplicate content when retrying a failed save? Should the Append and Prepend toggles be disabled automatically after a save failure? Is relying on backup-on-save sufficient to mitigate the risk of duplicated writes, or must users manually ensure overwrite mode is used?

Do not retry WriteOut while Append or Prepend is active. After a failed save, check the status line for an Append or Prepend indicator, toggle it off with Meta-A or Meta-P, then retry WriteOut. Backup on save does not prevent duplication on retry.
When Append or Prepend is enabled, nano opens the target file for append/prepend rather than truncate/overwrite. Each successful WriteOut therefore adds the whole buffer to the existing file. Because the toggle persists across retries, a second successful WriteOut after a transient failure appends the buffer again, producing duplicate content. This is a consequence of persistent mode state, not a bug in the retry logic.
Persistent risk: .nanorc can enable append/prepend by default. Check for set append or set prepend in ~/.nanorc and system nanorc files if the toggle appears unexpectedly.
Enable Append with Meta-A, make a small edit, force a write failure such as a read-only target, fix the permission, toggle Append off with Meta-A, then WriteOut. The file should contain one copy of the buffer. Repeating the test with Append left on shows duplication on the second successful WriteOut.
One diagnostic detail that changes the recommendation: is Append/Prepend enabled manually in this session or set persistently in .nanorc? Persistent enablement warrants config change rather than per-session toggling.
