Local‑time vs. UTC display for CodePen Pen timestamps: which trade‑off serves collaboration best?

Goal: decide whether CodePen should add a user‑selectable option to show Pen timestamps in UTC instead of relying on the viewer’s local time zone, given that all timestamps are stored in UTC and currently rendered via the browser’s locale.
Constraint: the absence of a built‑in setting forces collaborators in different regions to see different local times for the same Pen update, creating ambiguity; developers who need uniform times must implement their own conversion logic inside the Pen, which may conflict with existing date‑based logic that assumes local display.
Questions: Would a UTC‑display toggle reduce confusion for international teams? Does the current local‑time behavior satisfy the majority of solo developers? How would introducing a UTC option affect Pens that depend on the displayed local time for countdowns or scheduling?

A user-selectable UTC toggle is the best solution for international collaboration because it provides a single, unambiguous reference point. While local-time rendering is intuitive for solo developers, it creates a "cognitive tax" for distributed teams who must manually calculate offsets to synchronize updates or debug time-sensitive changes.
The current behavior—rendering UTC storage via the browser's locale—satisfies the majority of solo developers because their personal timeline is the only relevant context. However, for teams, this creates a fragmented reality where the same event is recorded at different times across different screens.
Introducing a UTC option may affect Pens that use innerText or DOM scraping to read the displayed timestamp for client-side logic (such as custom countdowns or scheduling displays). If a Pen's script assumes the timestamp is in the viewer's local time and the user toggles to UTC, the resulting date calculations will be offset by the user's timezone difference.
To ensure this change does not break existing Pens, verify the following before a full rollout:
document.querySelector to extract the timestamp string for calculations.Missing Diagnostic: Does CodePen currently provide a programmatic API or data attribute (e.g., data-utc-timestamp) on the timestamp element? If so, Pens should be encouraged to use that attribute rather than the rendered text, rendering the display toggle safe for all logic.
