Limits of Xcode StoreKit Testing vs App Store Sandbox for subscription flows

I'm designing the purchase-testing strategy for an iOS app with auto-renewable subscriptions and want to rely on Xcode's local StoreKit Testing (a .storekit configuration file attached to the scheme) for as much coverage as possible, reserving the App Store Sandbox with sandbox Apple IDs for what genuinely needs Apple's servers.
My understanding is that the local configuration supports accelerated subscription time and works with StoreKitTest (SKTestSession) in XCTest, all without production credentials. What is unclear is where the boundary sits: local testing apparently does not exercise App Store Server Notifications, server-side receipt validation, or family-sharing/ask-to-buy flows, and I cannot find a definitive statement of which renewal, billing-retry, and grace-period behaviors are faithfully simulated locally versus only in sandbox.

1. Lifecycle events that require the Sandbox
2. Trustworthiness of SKTestSession for CI coverage
3. Xcode version differences
Local StoreKit operates entirely in memory. It does not make any network calls to Apple’s servers, so:
File > New > File… > StoreKit Configuration and add your auto‑renewable subscription product.let session = SKTestSession.default
session.launch()
// Simulate a purchase
let product = try await session.fetchProduct(withIdentifier: "com.example.sub")
await session.purchase(product)
// Advance time for renewal
session.advance(by: .hours(24))
// In your integration test, use the real StoreKit API
let product = try await SKProducts.request(withIdentifiers: ["com.example.sub"]).first!
await product.purchase()
// The Sandbox will handle retry timers and send real server notifications
If your CI pipeline includes any of the following:
https://buy.itunes.apple.com/verifyReceipt or the sandbox endpoint.INITIAL_BUY, RENEWAL, INTERACTIVE_RENEWAL).In those cases, set up a dedicated Sandbox Apple ID and run the tests against the real StoreKit API. For pure UI/UX flows that only need purchase and renewal logic, the local StoreKit configuration is sufficient and far faster.
Do you need to validate server‑side receipt handling or test family‑sharing scenarios? That will influence whether you must add Sandbox runs to the CI matrix.
