Muting a competition does not prevent notifications for kernels that merely tag that competition. Because kernel notifications are driven by the kernel's own metadata and the user's global kernel settings, they operate independently of the specific competition's mute status.
Notification Constraints
Kaggle does not currently provide a native method to selectively enable only deadline-change alerts while disabling other competition notifications. Furthermore, there is no supported internal "digest" feature to summarize these updates into a single periodic email; alerts are delivered as discrete, instant events.
Current Platform Behavior
- Competition Muting: Suppresses direct updates from the competition itself but does not filter out third-party kernels that reference the competition via tags.
- Kernel Alerts: Disabling these globally to reduce noise will hide all kernel notifications, including those unrelated to your active competitions.
- Granularity: Notification toggles in the user settings are coarse-grained (category-level) rather than event-level (e.g., you cannot toggle "Deadlines" on and "New Posts" off).
Recommended Noise Reduction Strategy
Since the platform lacks granular filters, the most effective way to isolate deadline changes is to move the filtering logic to your email client. Use the following steps to create a custom rule:
- Identify the Trigger: Open a previous deadline notification email and identify unique keywords in the subject line or body (e.g., "deadline has been extended" or "deadline change").
- Create a Filter: Set up a rule in your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) to move all emails from
kaggle.com to a specific folder/label.
- Set Exceptions: Add an exception to that rule so that emails containing your identified "deadline" keywords remain in your primary inbox or trigger a high-priority alert.
Verification Steps
To confirm your current settings, navigate to User Profile > Settings > Notifications. Verify which global toggles are active. To test the mute behavior, mute a low-priority competition and observe if you still receive alerts for new kernels tagged with that competition's name.
Diagnostic Detail Needed: Are you receiving these alerts primarily via email, browser push notifications, or both? (This determines if email filtering is sufficient or if browser-level blocking is required.)
