Keyboard focus interoperability between SPSS dialog windows and the syntax editor

The goal is to determine whether a user can navigate from any modal dialog back to the syntax editor using only the keyboard, without relying on mouse clicks or screen‑reader specific commands.
Constraints include version‑specific focus management (SPSS 28 vs 29), platform differences between Windows and macOS builds, and the potential impact of customized toolbars or third‑party add‑ons that may alter tab order or shortcut bindings.
Does pressing Escape or Ctrl+Tab consistently return focus to the syntax editor in the current release? Does the behavior change when a screen reader such as NVDA is active? Are there any documented keyboard shortcuts that explicitly move focus back to the editor, and are they honored across dialog types?

In current releases of IBM SPSS Statistics (including versions 28 and 29), there is no native, single-key shortcut (such as Escape or Ctrl+Tab) that consistently moves keyboard focus from an open modal dialog window back to the Syntax Editor without dismissing the dialog first.
The interaction between the dialog interface and the Syntax Editor is governed by the following behaviors:
Escape typically cancels the dialog and returns focus to the previous active window, but it does not allow you to interact with the Syntax Editor while the dialog remains open.Paste button (or its keyboard equivalent) sends the generated syntax to the Syntax Editor, it does not shift the keyboard focus to the editor. The focus remains within the dialog window.Alt+Tab on Windows or Cmd+` on macOS).When a screen reader like NVDA is active, focus management is further constrained by the accessibility layer. Screen readers generally follow the OS focus; if a dialog is modal, the screen reader will remain trapped within that dialog's boundaries until the window is closed or submitted. There are no documented SPSS-specific shortcuts that bypass this modal behavior for screen reader users.
To verify the focus behavior in your specific environment, perform the following test:
Enter.Ctrl+S.To provide a more tailored workaround, please specify if you are using a customized toolbar configuration or third-party extensions, as these can occasionally alter the default tab order of the application.

One clarification on version boundaries: the Ctrl+Shift+E / Cmd+Shift+E “Focus on Syntax Editor” command appears to be a SPSS 29 addition, not present in SPSS 28. On 28, Ctrl+Tab only cycles dialog controls and focus returns only after Esc or Alt+F4. Because add‑ons and custom toolbars can rebind shortcuts, verify the binding in your build before relying on it.
Screen‑reader behavior also differs by platform. With NVDA on Windows, Tab stays inside the dialog, but Insert+Home (or Home on some layouts) can move focus to the last interacted object, which may be the syntax editor. On macOS, Cmd+W closes the dialog and VoiceOver announces the editor as a separate window, confirming focus has returned. These behaviors should be re‑checked in your exact SPSS 29 build and screen‑reader version.
