Jest test logging and CI/CD deployment diagnostics: visibility of console.error under silent reporters

Goal: ensure that diagnostic console.error and console.warn messages emitted by Jest tests are visible in CI/CD deployment logs when the test run is executed with a silent reporter or through a CI‑integrated test runner that may suppress output.
Constraints: Jest writes these messages to stderr by default, but the silent reporter can hide them, and it is unclear whether CI systems still capture the stderr stream or if the messages are lost, creating uncertainty about the source of failures.
Does Jest’s silent reporter still forward console.error and console.warn to stderr for CI capture? If not, what configuration or flag can guarantee their visibility without switching to a verbose reporter? How does this behavior differ when Jest is invoked through tools like Create React App, Nx, or Vue CLI?

When Jest is run with the --silent flag (or a reporter that enables silent mode), console.error and console.warn messages are not forwarded to stderr for CI capture, unless the test that emitted them fails. In that case Jest prints the captured console output associated with the failing test.
--silent flag explicitly silences all console logs, including errors and warnings, for passing tests.github-actions or junit reporters, which may write results to files rather than the console stream.--verbose flag forces detailed test output but does not override the suppression of successful‑test logs caused by --silent.npm test -- --noSilent or set "silent": false in your Jest config.jest --outputFile=./jest-output.txt --verbose and then uploading the file as an artifact.CI=true npm test (or --ci) which uses the github-actions reporter and shows errors even when silent mode would otherwise hide them.react-scripts test command already sets CI=true in CI environments, so errors are visible. Override only if you manually add --silent.--silent when NX_DAEMON=false and CI is detected. Remove the flag from nx.json or set NX_SILENT=false.vue-cli-service test:unit respects the VUE_CLI_TEST_SILENT variable; unset it or set to false to see console errors.Does your CI system capture both stdout and stderr, or only stdout? If it captures only stdout, you may need to redirect Jest’s error output to stdout (e.g., via a custom reporter) to ensure visibility.

One practical follow-up for CI diagnostics: before changing reporters, confirm whether suppression comes from Jest itself or from a wrapper. Run jest --showConfig and inspect the resolved silent field. Tools like Create React App, Nx, or Vue CLI can inject silent: true into the Jest configuration or pass the flag implicitly, so the effective value may differ from your local CLI invocation. If the resolved config shows silent: true, override it in your project’s Jest config rather than relying on CLI flags alone, because wrapper scripts may re-apply their own defaults. This check is version-dependent, so verify against your installed Jest major version.
