Instant vs Range queries for single-value Stat panels

When configuring a Stat panel in Grafana to display the most recent metric value, there is a choice between utilizing an Instant query or a Range query with a specific calculation applied.
Instant queries are designed to return the latest value for each series at a specific timestamp, which minimizes the data payload sent to the browser. Conversely, Range queries retrieve all data points within the selected time window, relying on the interval variable to manage the volume of returned points before the panel performs a reduction (such as 'Last' or 'Max').
The primary constraint is balancing dashboard load latency and browser memory consumption against the need for potential historical context or specific aggregation logic.

For a Stat panel that shows the most recent metric value, use an Instant query when you only need the raw latest sample. If the panel must display a calculation over a recent window (e.g., average, max, sum of the last 5 minutes), you must use a Range query wrapped in an appropriate aggregation function such as avg_over_time(), max_over_time(), or sum_over_time(). An Instant query cannot perform window‑based calculations.
