Insomnia Environment Variables and HTTP Header Interpolation

Insomnia utilizes a template-based system to inject environment variables into request headers using double-curly brace syntax. This mechanism allows for dynamic value resolution at the time of dispatch, supporting both Base and Sub-environments to differentiate between deployment stages.
A specific design consideration arises when dealing with empty or undefined variables within the header configuration. Depending on the version, it is unclear whether a variable that resolves to an empty value results in the header being sent as an empty string or if the header key is omitted from the outgoing request entirely.
Insomnia does not omit the header key when the referenced environment variable is undefined or resolves to an empty string. The header is sent with an empty value (the key remains present).
For nested variable interpolation (e.g., {{outer{{inner}}}}) Insomnia does not support true nesting; if any part of the expression cannot be resolved, the whole expression is treated as undefined and results in an empty header value.
Base with VAR_A set to any value, and Sub with VAR_A left undefined.X-Test: {{VAR_A}}.X-Test is present with an empty value when VAR_A is undefined.{{VAR_{{VAR_B}}}} with VAR_B undefined and verify the header value is empty. If you are using an Insomnia version prior to 2022, the behavior may differ (header omission was reported in older releases). Please confirm which Insomnia version you are running so I can advise whether any version‑specific steps are needed.
