Handlebars helper execution remains synchronous, blocking async operations

Handlebars 4.x executes every helper synchronously and does not await promises returned by helper functions. The engine coerces the helper result directly to a string, so an unresolved promise appears as “[object Promise]” or an empty string in the rendered output.
The documentation explicitly states that helpers must return a string or a Handlebars.SafeString, and there is no runtime flag or configuration option to enable asynchronous helper resolution. This limitation has been tracked since 2013 (issue #831) and remains open in the current release line.

Handlebars 4.x has no built‑in way to make helpers asynchronous; helpers are invoked synchronously and their return value is immediately coerced to a string.
await and passes the result to Utils.escapeString (see src/runtime.js).The design keeps the render loop simple and avoids the complexity of promise handling inside the template engine. Consequently, the officially supported pattern is to resolve any async data before rendering and pass the resolved values into the template context.
async/await or Promise.all).Handlebars.compile(template)(context).const template = Handlebars.compile('{{formatDate date}}');
const context = { date: await getDateFromApi() }; // resolved before compile
const html = template(context);
There is no public roadmap entry promising async helper support. The open issue #831 remains without a target release, so native async helpers are not expected in the near future.
