Gatsby Data Layer and Page-Data.json Payload Optimization

Gatsby utilizes a centralized GraphQL schema to aggregate content from various source plugins during the build process. This architecture allows components to use useStaticQuery to fetch data independently of the component tree, which is then serialized into page-data.json files for client-side hydration.
When integrating large datasets or complex relational queries, there is a risk of creating bloated JSON payloads. This can negatively impact the Time to Interactive (TTI) as the browser must download and parse these files before the page becomes fully interactive.
Given the build-time nature of the data layer, it is unclear how to precisely constrain the amount of data serialized into these files without manually splitting components or implementing complex query logic.
page-data.json size?In Gatsby v5, there is no native "exclude from client" flag for fields within a standard GraphQL page query or useStaticQuery. If a field is requested in a query used by a component, Gatsby serializes that data into the page-data.json file to ensure the page can be hydrated and navigated to via client-side routing without a full reload.
Gatsby does not provide a built-in dashboard to map specific GraphQL queries to byte-counts in the final JSON. To audit the contribution of individual queries, you must use a manual differential analysis:
gatsby build to generate the public folder.page-data.json file in public/page-data/[page-path]/page-data.json.useStaticQuery or remove fields from a page query, rebuild, and compare the file size of the resulting JSON.To keep data available for build-time logic (like generating slugs or page counts) without sending it to the browser, you must move that logic out of the component queries and into gatsby-node.js.
Confirmed Strategy: Only pass the minimum required data via the context object in the createPage action. Data used exclusively inside createPages to determine the site structure is never serialized into page-data.json unless it is explicitly requested again in the page's GraphQL query.
If your payloads are unexpectedly large, the cause is typically one of the following:
useStaticQuery: Because these queries are bundled into the page's data regardless of whether the component is conditionally rendered, they can add significant weight to every page that imports the component.Diagnostic Detail Needed: Are you utilizing useStaticQuery within components that are shared across a majority of your pages, or is the bloat isolated to specific high-content templates?
