Fibre Channel NPIV Integration with Storage Array Zoning: Credential Expiration and Least‑Privilege Handling

Goal: Ensure that each virtual WWN created by Fibre Channel NPIV adheres to the same least‑privilege authentication policies and credential expiration rules applied to physical initiators.
Constraint: NPIV itself only provides virtual WWN isolation; it does not manage authentication credentials, relying on fabric zoning and LUN masking for access control. Higher‑level protocols (e.g., NVMe/FC, iSCSI over FC) handle credential lifecycles, but it is unclear how expiration events are propagated to the virtual WWNs or how to enforce per‑WWN privilege limits without manual zone updates.

NPIV does not manage credentials itself. Credential expiration must be enforced at the fabric (switch) layer using principal‑timeout or FC‑SP/FC‑MAP, and at the storage array layer using per‑virtual‑WWN LUN masks that are updated via the array’s management API. Least‑privilege per virtual WWN is achieved by programming host ACLs on the array that reference each virtual WWN directly, avoiding fabric re‑zoning. Vendor‑specific APIs (Brocade DCX, Cisco MDS NX‑OS NPIV API, HPE Nimble SSMC) expose WWN lifecycle events so orchestration can revoke zones or update ACLs when credentials lapse.

The availability of zone‑timeout / FC‑SP integration differs by vendor and firmware; the exact revocation method depends on this information.
