In this example, a repaired desktop receives a fresh Windows Pro installation. The previous installation was Home with a digital license linked to the owner’s Microsoft account. The activation troubleshooter does not make Pro activate. What should be checked before assuming the linked account is broken?

Check the edition mismatch first. Microsoft’s reactivation guidance requires the installed edition to match the license. A linked Home digital license does not become a Pro entitlement because the same account signs in after a hardware change.

Confirm the valid license and purchase records, then follow the appropriate supported installation or upgrade path. For a matching edition, use the hardware-change troubleshooter with the account associated with the digital license. Do not post the product key publicly or use unofficial activation scripts.

If we reinstall the matching edition, is transfer automatically guaranteed?

No. Eligibility depends on the license and circumstances. Confirm the entitlement and use official support or the manufacturer when the supported reactivation process cannot resolve it.

For planned repairs, record activation status, edition and account association beforehand, alongside a verified backup. That makes the post-repair investigation much less ambiguous.
