In this fictional case, effective network rules match the approved client and the VM shows Running. RDP still fails before any sign-in prompt. The incident began after a guest update. The team has not yet inspected boot diagnostics and is considering redeploying the VM immediately. What evidence should they collect first?

Confirm that the address being tested still belongs to the intended VM. A stale target and an unhealthy guest can look similar from the client, and they require different fixes.

Inspect boot diagnostics and resource health before choosing a disruptive recovery operation. Running describes the VM power state, not proof that Windows completed startup or that the RDP listener is ready. A recovery screen, service failure or boot problem can remain invisible if the investigation stops at the portal’s power label.
