EF Core 8.0: Automatic Down Method Generation for Schema Rollbacks Remains Unimplemented

Background
Entity Framework Core exposes Up and Down methods in migrations to apply and revert schema changes. The scaffolder automatically generates only the Up code; the Down section is left empty for the developer to fill in.
Unresolved Decision
When a migration is rolled back, EF Core executes the Down method. If the method is incomplete or omitted, the database may retain new columns, tables, or data, leading to an inconsistent schema state. Certain operations, such as dropping a column, cannot be automatically reversed, and the community has debated whether EF Core should provide an automatic Down generator for a subset of reversible changes.
What criteria would EF Core use to generate a reversible Down method for operations like adding a column or dropping a table? How can developers reliably ensure that a rollback will not leave the database in an inconsistent state when Down methods are incomplete? Would a future EF Core feature that auto‑generates Down logic for certain schema changes be feasible, and what trade‑offs would it introduce?
