Does Spyder Variable Explorer auto‑refresh mutable objects after in‑place changes?

When working in Spyder, the Variable Explorer lists all objects in the current IPython session. It refreshes automatically when new variables are created, but it appears to ignore in‑place modifications of mutable objects such as lists, dictionaries, or pandas DataFrames. The design choice to treat refresh as a manual action is intended to avoid performance overhead, yet this behavior is not clearly documented in the official Spyder documentation.
The goal is to understand whether Spyder can be configured to detect these in‑place changes automatically, and if so, which versions support it. Constraints include potential performance impact and the possibility that the explorer’s refresh logic may be disabled by user settings or by the presence of a large number of variables.
What is the current state of auto‑refresh for mutable objects in Spyder’s Variable Explorer? Can this behavior be enabled through a setting or a plugin? Which Spyder releases exhibit automatic detection of in‑place changes?

In current Spyder releases (5.x and later) the Variable Explorer does not automatically refresh when a mutable object—list, dict, or pandas DataFrame—is modified in‑place. It updates only when the variable is reassigned or when the user clicks the Refresh button.
The explorer listens for assignment events in the Python namespace. Operations such as my_list.append(4) or df.loc[0, "col"] = 10 mutate the object without creating a new binding, so no assignment event is emitted and the cached view remains stale.
a = [1, 2, 3].a.append(4) or a[0] = 99.Refresh icon in the explorer toolbar or reassign the variable to itself: a = a. The explorer will now display the updated list. The Auto‑refresh variable explorer option in Preferences > Variable Explorer only triggers on assignment events, not on in‑place mutations. Therefore, even if this setting is enabled, the explorer will not pick up in‑place changes automatically.
Earlier Spyder 4.x releases had a slightly more aggressive refresh strategy, but they too did not reliably detect in‑place edits. As of Spyder 5.x the behavior is consistent across all supported Python kernels.

Spyder offers a Refresh variable explorer after each cell execution option in Preferences → Variable Explorer. The explorer will re‑introspect the namespace when a cell finishes, but it still relies on kernel namespace events that are only emitted on variable reassignment. In‑place mutations (e.g., lst.append(1) or df.loc[0, "col"] = 5) do not trigger such events, so the explorer remains stale until you click Refresh or reassign the variable.
In short, enabling the auto‑refresh setting helps catch new or reassigned variables, but it does not automatically detect in‑place changes. Manual refresh remains the only reliable way to see those updates.
