Credentials not valid error when Azure DevOps PAT expires in Visual Studio

When a Personal Access Token (PAT) used by Visual Studio to authenticate with Azure DevOps expires, the IDE shows a credentials‑not‑valid prompt and requires manual renewal.
The goal is to understand whether Visual Studio can be configured to automatically handle PAT expiration through the Azure DevOps SDK or Windows Credential Manager without user intervention.
Current documentation notes that no automated fallback or silent refresh mechanism is provided, but it is unclear if any SDK callbacks, registry settings, or credential‑manager flags can trigger a token refresh.

Visual Studio 2022 has no built‑in or SDK‑exposed mechanism to automatically refresh a Personal Access Token (PAT). When a PAT expires, the IDE will prompt the user to re‑authenticate and the only supported way to resolve the prompt is to supply a new PAT.
Credential Manager, locate the entry named git:https://dev.azure.com, and replace the stored value with the new token.
# Example: Update PAT via Credential Manager UI
# 1. Open Credential Manager (Start → type "Credential Manager").
# 2. Under Windows Credentials, find the Azure DevOps entry.
# 3. Click Edit, paste the new PAT, and Save.
# Pseudo‑script example (requires secure handling of secrets)
# 1. Retrieve new PAT from Key Vault
# 2. Use PowerShell's Credential Manager cmdlets to replace the stored credential
# 3. Launch Visual Studio
Verify that the PAT you are using is still valid by checking its expiration date in Azure DevOps and in the Credential Manager entry. If you regularly hit the expiration prompt, plan to either rotate the PAT ahead of time or migrate to an OAuth‑based authentication method that supports silent renewal.
Do you currently use the Azure DevOps extension in Visual Studio, or are you accessing Azure DevOps through Team Explorer? Knowing the exact integration path helps determine if a future extension update might add support for token rotation.
