Netlify Deploy Previews: Isolating Staging APIs and Preventing Indexing
How to configure Netlify Deploy Previews to point at staging APIs, inject noindex headers, and avoid common quota and naming pitfalls.

The preview isolation problem
When a team reviews a pull request imagining how a change looks in the browser is a common blocker. Netlify Deploy Previews build every PR commit to a temporary URL but without careful configuration a preview can silently read from your production API or expose sensitive data to anyone with the link. Which ensures preview builds do not accidentally read from your live production database and cause data leaks or inconsistent test results.
Isolating previews with netlify.toml contexts
Netlify reads a netlify.toml file at build time. Defining context deploy-preview blocks lets you set environment variables only for preview deploys such as pointing API_BASE_URL at a staging backend instead of production.
context deploy-preview command = npm run build context deploy-preview.environment API_BASE_URL = https staging-api.example.com FEATURE_FLAGS = preview context production.environment API_BASE_URL = https api.example.comPreview-aware headers with CONTEXT
Search engines should not index preview builds. A build script can read the CONTEXT environment variable and generate an appropriate _headers file, and the X-Robots-Tag header is respected by most search engines to prevent the preview URL from appearing in search results, keeping your staging environment clean.
if [ $CONTEXT = deploy-preview ]; then printf '/* X-Robots-Tag: noindex' > dist/_headers fiAdd this to your build command: ./scripts/write-headers.sh && npm run build. Make the script executable with git update-index --chmod=+x scripts/write-headers.sh or invoke via bash scripts/write-headers.sh. Verify with curl -sI preview-url.netlify.app | grep -i x-robots.
Trade-offs and limitations
- Build minutes and concurrency every PR push consumes minutes free tier caps concurrent previews which can queue feedback
- Backend parity previews are static edge deploys decide explicitly whether they hit staging or production data
- Secrets never put production secrets in preview context variables preview URLs are unguessable but publicly accessible
- Long branch names preview URLs derive from deploy IDs but very long branch names still make PR comments noisy a short naming convention helps
- Branch naming adopt a concise prefix convention e.g. feat fix to keep preview URLs readable in PR comments
Quick verification checklist
- Push a commit to a branch with an open pull request
- Confirm the preview link appears in the PR discussion
- Open the URL and check headers curl -sI preview-url.netlify.app | grep -i x-robots should return noindex
- Use the Netlify CLI netlify deploys:list to confirm preview deploys exist for the expected context
- Check that the preview site settings in the Netlify dashboard show the correct build plugin status
Takeaway: Add a context deploy-preview section to netlify.toml to set staging API URLs and use a build script that reads CONTEXT to inject X-Robots-Tag noindex into preview _headers. Fifteen minutes of setup removes an entire category of works on my machine review friction.
