Choosing a Netlify Deployment Strategy: Git-based vs. CLI vs. Manual
Compare Git-based CD, Netlify CLI, and manual uploads to determine the best deployment strategy for your static site based on build control and review needs.

The Deployment Decision
Selecting a deployment method for Netlify depends on where your build process lives and who needs to review changes before they go live. The primary trade-off is between convenience (automated triggers) and control (custom build environments).
Comparison of Deployment Methods
| Feature | Git-based CD | Netlify CLI | Manual Drag-and-Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build Location | Netlify Servers | Local or External CI | Local Machine |
| Trigger | Git Push / Merge | Command Line / API | Manual Upload |
| Deploy Previews | Native (per PR) | Manual Draft URLs | None |
| Configuration | UI or netlify.toml | netlify.toml | None |
Evaluating the Trade-offs
Git-based Continuous Deployment (CD)
This is the standard for most professional projects. By linking a GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repository, Netlify monitors specific branches. When a push occurs, Netlify pulls the code, runs your build command, and deploys the output.
- Advantage: Deploy Previews. Every pull request generates a unique URL, allowing stakeholders to test features in isolation.
- Risk: Build Minute Quotas. Frequent commits to tracked branches consume your monthly build minute allowance.
Netlify CLI (Programmatic Deploys)
The CLI allows you to bypass Netlify's build servers. You run the build command locally or in a separate CI tool (like Jenkins or CircleCI) and push only the final static assets.
- Advantage: Environment Consistency. You control the exact Node.js version and OS environment used for the build.
- Risk: Local Drift. If a developer deploys from their machine, the site may reflect local configurations that aren't mirrored in the repository.
Manual Drag-and-Drop
This method involves uploading a folder of static files directly through the Netlify UI. It is intended for prototypes or sites without version control.
- Advantage: Zero configuration. No Git or CLI knowledge required.
- Risk: No audit trail. There is no history of what changed between versions.
Implementation: Using netlify.toml for Versioned Config
To ensure consistency across different deployment methods, use a netlify.toml file. This file resides in your project root and overrides settings configured in the Netlify UI, ensuring that both CLI and Git-based deploys use the same rules.
# netlify.toml configuration example
[build]
# The command to generate your static site
command = "npm run build"
# The directory containing the final HTML/CSS/JS
publish = "dist"
[[redirects]]
from = "/old-page"
to = "/new-page"
status = 301
Validating the Deployment
To verify your configuration is working correctly via the CLI, follow these steps:
- Install the CLI: Run
npm install netlify-cli -gon your local machine. - Authenticate: Run
netlify loginto link your account. - Draft Deploy: Run
netlify deploy. This uploads yourpublishdirectory to a draft URL. Note: This does not affect your production site. - Check Result: Click the provided Draft URL to ensure all assets (CSS/JS) are loading correctly.
- Production Push: If the draft is correct, run
netlify deploy --prodto update the live site.
Rollback Procedure
Because Netlify keeps a history of every successful deploy, rolling back is a state-change operation performed in the UI:
- Navigate to Site configuration > Deploys.
- Locate the previous successful deploy timestamp.
- Select Publish deploy. This instantly points the production DNS to the previous build's assets.
Limitations
Regardless of the method, Netlify has a maximum build duration. If your command takes longer than the platform limit (typically 15-20 minutes depending on the plan), the build will time out. In such cases, switching to a Netlify CLI workflow with an external CI provider is the recommended solution to handle heavy build processes.
