World Space Week 2026: Rocket Revolution Theme and India's Gaganyaan Milestone
World Space Week 2026 runs 4-10 October with the Rocket Revolution theme. Learn the historical dates, reusable launch trends, and India's Gaganyaan 2027 plans.

World Space Week 2026 (वर्ल्ड स्पेस वीक 2026) is observed from 4 October to 10 October. The United Nations designated the week in 1999 to mark the start of the Space Age and the rules that govern peaceful use of outer space. In India the week is trending as searches for the dates, theme and ISRO plans rise.
What World Space Week 2026 marks
The week is anchored to two historical events. 4 October marks the 1957 launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. 10 October marks the 1967 signing of the Outer Space Treaty, which set principles for peaceful exploration and non-appropriation of space. The observance brings together agencies, companies, educators, museums and astronomy clubs for talks, exhibitions and hands-on STEM activities.
This year’s focus is on how launch economics and technology are changing. Reusable boosters, new vehicle architectures and a larger commercial sector are lowering costs and increasing flight cadence. The shift is enabling more satellites for communications, navigation, weather and Earth observation, as well as broader access for science and human spaceflight.
Rocket Revolution theme explained
The 2026 theme is Rocket Revolution. Organisers use the theme to highlight technologies and organisations that are changing how humanity reaches and uses space, and to encourage student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The revolution is visible in several trends:
- Reusability: parts of launch vehicles returning to Earth for multiple flights.
- Commercial growth: private firms building launch services, satellite constellations and in-orbit services.
- Diverse missions: from Earth monitoring and disaster response to scientific probes and crew transport.
Recent developments illustrate the theme. In late September 2026 SpaceX’s Starship reached orbit for the first time on a test flight and deployed a batch of Starlink V3 satellites, a milestone for the vehicle’s development programme. Space.com
India and the global context
For India the week coincides with anticipation around Gaganyaan. ISRO is working towards its first crewed flight in 2027, which would make India the fourth country to launch people using an indigenous rocket. The milestone is often discussed alongside global human spaceflight progress.
Globally, more than 80 countries have placed satellites in orbit and people from over 50 countries have travelled to space. By the Karman line definition at least 746 people from 52 countries have flown, with women accounting for about 15 percent of travellers. Artemis II flew around the Moon in April 2026, setting a new distance record, ahead of planned Artemis landings in the late 2020s. Al Jazeera
How to engage during the week
Events in 2026 are planned across about 100 nations, ranging from classroom activities and model rocket launches to public exhibitions and night-sky watching. The week also notes astronomical highlights such as Saturn at opposition on 4 October and meteor shower peaks around 8-9 October.
