Why 'weather patna' spiked in late September 2026
Google Trends recorded the query "weather patna" as a trending search in India with roughly 200 searches and about 200% growth in the 24 hours around 26 September 2026. The spike was driven by Cyclone Arnab's effects on Bihar: persistent heavy rain in Patna, waterlogging across the city, flood conditions in Supaul, and rivers flowing above danger marks. Note that these events date to 26–28 September 2026 — as of mid-October 2026 the alerts described below are no longer current, and readers should check the IMD for present conditions.
How much rain did Patna and Bihar get?
According to a Dainik Bhaskar report dated 26 September 2026, Bihar recorded an average of 267% more rain than normal over the preceding three days. Buxar saw the highest departure at 600% of normal, while Patna recorded 271% — about 34.9 mm in that period. Sitamarhi reported the state's highest single reading at 144 mm. These departure figures are as reported by the newspaper and were not independently verified against IMD data.
Navbharat Times reported that Patna received over 100 mm of rain in two days, with a noticeable drop in temperature and waterlogging in Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Gandhi Maidan, Boring Road, Rajiv Nagar and around Patna Junction and Dak Bungalow crossing. The rain also forced the cancellation of the Railway Group D exam scheduled for 26–27 September in Khagaul, and a Delhi–Patna Air India Express flight was diverted to Kolkata after it could not land, per Dainik Bhaskar.
IMD alerts and river situation
The IMD issued a yellow alert for rain in 19 Bihar districts and an orange alert for heavy rain over the following 24 hours. Jagran reported on 26 September 2026 that the Patna meteorological centre warned of extremely heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusts of 40–50 km/h in East Champaran, West Champaran and Gopalganj.
Fed by rain in Nepal, the Kosi and Bagmati rivers flowed above danger marks, and the Gandak's level was rising. Dainik Bhaskar reported flood conditions in 50 villages of Supaul, severe bank erosion near Chiraiya village in Bakhtiyarpur, and the release of over 3.16 lakh cusecs from the Kosi barrage on the morning of 26 September.
Casualties and damage reported
The same report said two children died after a snake bite in Sotha Chak village of Parsa Bazar — locals attributed it to snakes entering homes because of the rain — and a 10-year-old boy, Shivam Kumar, died in Khagaria's Beldaur block when a house wall collapsed during heavy rain. Two women drowned in Araria after the Baluahi stream's level rose suddenly. In Khagaria's Parbatta block, storm winds blew off roofs and toppled a transformer.
What the search trend actually tells us
Google Trends data confirms search interest, not weather severity: roughly 200 searches is a modest absolute number, and the 200% growth figure reflects a jump from a low baseline. People typing "weather patna" that weekend wanted practical answers — whether rain would continue, which areas were waterlogged, and whether exams and travel were affected. The IMD forecast at the time indicated heavy rain through 26 September, with conditions normalising from 27 September and only light showers thereafter.
