Who is Raja Karuppasamy? Tamil Director Trends After Kamal Haasan's Praise

Raja Karuppasamy, the director of the film Modha Rathiri, recently trended in India following an emotional social media tribute to veteran actor Kamal Haasan. The trend was sparked by a meeting between the two, occurring ahead of the film's premiere on Netflix, where Karuppasamy reflected on his transition from a devoted fan to a professional filmmaker.

The 'Kodambakkam' Endorsement

The primary driver of the search interest was a specific piece of encouragement Kamal Haasan gave to the young director. In a post shared by Karuppasamy, he revealed that the legendary actor told him, “You should show everyone in Kodambakkam who you are,” (Source 1). For a debut director, this validation from an industry icon serves as a significant professional milestone, especially as Kodambakkam is the heart of the Tamil film industry.

Cinema as a 'School': Karuppasamy's Inspiration

Raja Karuppasamy described Kamal Haasan's body of work not just as entertainment, but as his personal "cinema school." He detailed how Haasan's films shaped his creative approach, specifically noting three key lessons learned from the actor's career:

• Character Immersion: Understanding how an actor can completely disappear into a role.
• Social Commentary: Learning how a filmmaker can use the medium to question society.
• Emotional Range: Mastering the ability to make an audience laugh, cry, and feel disturbed, ensuring the story lingers long after the credits roll.

Karuppasamy expressed that he spent his life discussing Haasan's characters and storytelling techniques, stating, "For me, you were never just an actor. You were my cinema school" (Source 2).

About 'Modha Rathiri' and Industry Reception

Beyond the emotional interaction with Kamal Haasan, Raja Karuppasamy has gained attention for his film Modha Rathiri. The movie has transitioned from its theatrical release to a global audience via its premiere on Netflix. The film has also received positive feedback from other prominent figures in the industry, including actor Dhanush, who described the movie as "heartwarming."
