Who is Pio Esposito? The Italian Footballer Making History with His Brother

Pio Esposito has trended across India following a historic and slightly comedic night for the Italian national team (Azzurri). On September 27, 2026, during a UEFA Nations League match against Turkey, Pio and his brother, Sebastiano Esposito, became the first pair of siblings to play together for Italy in 26 years, a milestone not seen since Simone and Filippo Inzaghi [1].

A Dream Debut and a Decisive Goal

The match served as a breakthrough for Pio Esposito, who made his international debut and immediately impacted the game by scoring a goal that helped Italy secure a 4-1 lead [1]. Meanwhile, Sebastiano Esposito, making his 11th appearance for the national side, scored the decisive goal to seal the victory [3].

The brothers hail from Castellammare di Stabia and come from a family with deep roots in football, making their simultaneous appearance on the world stage a significant familial achievement [3].

The Viral 'Substitution Mix-up'

While the performance was historic, a viral clip of a substitution error during the second half is what drove much of the recent online curiosity. Around the one-hour mark, coach Roberto Mancini decided to substitute one of the Esposito brothers for Doumbia [1].

Because both players share the same surname, a moment of confusion ensued. The fourth official initially called Pio (wearing No. 7) to leave the pitch. However, the technical staff quickly intervened to correct the error, clarifying that it was actually Sebastiano who was meant to be substituted [1]. This "identity crisis" on the sidelines became a talking point on social media, adding a lighthearted layer to an otherwise serious sporting milestone.
