WhatsApp Android Navigation Redesign: Floating Bottom Bar, Meta AI and What We Know So Far
WhatsApp is testing a floating, rounded bottom navigation bar in Android beta 2.26.38.10, inspired by iOS but keeping Material Design. Meta AI may join the bar; no rollout date is confirmed.

WhatsApp is testing a redesigned bottom navigation bar for its Android app, and Indian users noticed — Google Trends recorded roughly 2,000 searches and about 700% growth for the topic on 27–28 September 2026. The WhatsApp Android navigation redesign, spotted in beta version 2.26.38.10, gives the bottom bar a floating look with rounded corners, visually separated from the main chat screen. Here is what has actually been confirmed, what is still experimental, and when you might see it on your phone.
What changes in the new navigation bar
The current Android app already places Chats, Communities, Updates and Calls along the bottom — a shift WhatsApp made back in beta version 2.23.10.6. The new test goes further: the bar is detached from the main interface so it appears to float above the content, with rounded, more oval-shaped edges and a degree of added transparency. According to Business Today, the redesign is being tested in both light and dark themes, though the effect is currently more apparent in the light theme.
iOS-inspired, but not an iOS copy
The floating tab bar clearly borrows from WhatsApp's iPhone interface, which introduced a similar design earlier. However, the Android version keeps its own identity: it still follows Google's Material Design guidelines and does not include the full translucent effect seen on iOS. As Inshorts reported on 27 September 2026, the redesign is largely limited to the navigation bar, with the rest of the app continuing to follow Google's design principles. So Android users should not expect a wholesale iPhone-style makeover.
Meta AI moves into the navigation bar
The early beta build suggests Meta AI will become a dedicated item inside the navigation bar rather than remaining a floating button above the Compose button. But the feature is clearly unfinished: GSMArena noted on 26 September 2026 that the Meta AI button appears in two different places at once in the current build — a strong sign this is not the final design. Some beta users have also questioned whether pushing Meta AI into more prominent positions keeps the interface clean.
Who can see it, and when will it roll out?
The redesign was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.38.10, but reports differ slightly on availability: GSMArena says the beta is available to beta programme members, while Business Today reports the redesign has not yet been made available even to beta testers. The safest reading is that this is an early in-development build that only some testers may encounter. WhatsApp has announced no confirmed timeline for a broader rollout, and development could take several more weeks before anything reaches the stable version. If you want early access to such features, joining the WhatsApp beta programme via the Google Play Store is the usual route — though beta slots are often full.
Why it trended in India
India is one of WhatsApp's largest markets, so even a minor interface experiment draws attention. The search spike on 27–28 September 2026 reflects curiosity about the new look rather than a public release — as of late September 2026, nothing has changed for stable-channel users, and the design may still evolve significantly before launch.
