The by election in tamil nadu 2026 results for two assembly seats were declared on 9 October 2026. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won both Madurantakam and Dharapuram, increasing its strength in the 234-member assembly from 107 to 109. AIADMK had held both seats after the April 2026 assembly election.
Madurantakam and Dharapuram byelection results
| Constituency | Winner | Party | Votes | Margin | Runner-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Madurantakam | Maragatham Kumaravel | TVK | 74,048 | 20,040 votes | I. Paranthaman (DMK), 54,008 votes |
| Dharapuram | P. Sathyabama | TVK | 66,841 | 9,471 votes | DMK candidate, 57,370 votes |
Both winners were former AIADMK MLAs who joined TVK barely 20 days after the May 2026 assembly election results. AIADMK, which won the two segments in April 2026, was pushed to third place in both bypolls. DMK finished second in both constituencies despite contesting without most allies such as Congress, VCK, the Communist parties, and IUML.
The Hindu reported that both constituencies are reserved assembly seats. In Dharapuram, DMK’s vote count fell to 57,370 from 64,373 in the Assembly election, partly because of declined voter turnout and the absence of former allies. In Madurantakam, Maragatham Kumaravel secured 74,048 votes, more than 5,000 above her Assembly election tally, though the result raised questions about whether the entire AIADMK vote base moved with her after her defection to TVK.
Why these bypolls mattered
The Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypolls were TVK’s first electoral test after forming the government in Tamil Nadu. Fielding former AIADMK MLAs was an attempt to consolidate the ruling party’s position in constituencies it had not originally won. For DMK, fighting without most alliance partners tested whether it could remain the principal alternative to TVK on its own. For AIADMK, losing both seats it had won in April 2026 signaled a sharp reversal in the same assembly term.
What the results mean for TVK, DMK and AIADMK
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay called the outcome a “victory for political decorum and personal decency,” while DMK president M.K. Stalin described it as a “temporary victory for betrayal.” Reporting by The Hindu noted that TVK failed to match the vote count secured by AIADMK in the general election despite the defections, raising questions about how much of the earlier AIADMK vote base moved with the candidates. DMK’s second-place finishes suggest it retained much of its vote bank even while going it alone.
