Search interest for dearness allowance spiked in India in mid-September 2026 after Punjab's AAP government announced an 8% DA increase for state employees and pensioners. According to The Times of India, the move ended a prolonged standoff with unions and was timed ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, but older arrears and court cases remain unresolved.
What Punjab announced on 18 September 2026
On 18 September 2026 Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met representatives of employee and pensioners' organisations and announced relief for around eight lakh employees and pensioners by increasing Dearness Allowance by 8 per cent.
The increase is being implemented as two instalments of 4 per cent each and will be reflected in salaries from 1 October 2026. The government described the decision as a goodwill gesture while court proceedings continue.
Officials said the payout adds a Rs 231 crore burden to the state exchequer and, as reported by The New Indian Express, will be disbursed alongside the September salary, effectively backdated to July 2023 in the announcement.
Why the hike happened now
The announcement followed a statewide protest that began after the Punjab and Haryana High Court's 3 August 2026 judgment asking the government to clear DA dues. On 27 August more than three lakh employees took mass casual leave, escalating to a 'Maha Hartal' call.
The breakthrough came during a 90-minute meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, ministers Aman Arora and Baljit Kaur and 12 representatives of the Sanjha Mulazim Manch. The government also promised compulsory monthly meetings with employee representatives, women employee postings within 40 km of home, and a follow-up meeting in the first week of October to discuss long-pending issues including the Old Pension Scheme, probation period salary and ASHA and Mid-Day Meal workers.
What is still unresolved
The 8% hike does not settle older arrears. The state government had challenged the High Court order directing release of pending DA backdated to 2016 totalling around Rs 14,191 crore, and the matter remains pending before the Supreme Court.
Employee unions rejected a government request to file an affidavit claiming all disputes were settled, and union leaders said ongoing court proceedings regarding older DA arrears and salary discrepancies would continue unaffected.
With the 2027 Punjab assembly elections less than six months away, the timing of the DA release is widely read as politically motivated, offering immediate financial support ahead of the festive season while keeping legal liabilities open. Google Trends data observed on 19 September 2026 showed roughly 600% growth in 'dearness allowance' searches in India over the previous 24 hours, with approximately 20,000 searches — a signal of public interest, not independent confirmation of the claims themselves.
