PSU Bank Merger: PIB Debunks Fake Gazette Claiming 9 Banks Would Merge into SBI, PNB and BoB

If you searched for "psu bank merger" after seeing a viral document claiming nine public sector banks would be folded into State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda — the claim is false. The Press Information Bureau's Fact Check Unit has rejected the notification, and as of the clarification reported on 18 September 2026, no such merger proposal exists, The Economic Times reported.
What the fake notification claimed
The fabricated document was styled to look like an official Gazette of India notification. It spread across messaging apps and social media before drawing wider attention on X, and it named nine lenders to be grouped under three anchor banks:
- Into SBI: Indian Bank, Bank of Maharashtra and Central Bank of India, supposedly under a new "SBI Group" identity.
- Into PNB: Union Bank of India, Bank of India and Punjab & Sind Bank.
- Into Bank of Baroda: Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and UCO Bank.
PIB's Fact Check unit said the document wrongly dressed up a supposed banking consolidation as an official Finance Ministry decision, and confirmed the circulating file is fake.
Why the claim looked believable
The hoax found fertile ground because India really has merged PSU banks before. In 2019, ten public sector banks were combined into four, taking the count of state-owned lenders down from 27 to 12. Customers and employees who lived through that exercise know mergers do happen — which makes a convincing-looking forgery easier to believe. Nor was this the first attempt: in June 2026 a similar fabricated graphic claimed SBI, PNB and Canara Bank would be merged, and PIB had to issue a clarification then as well.
How a genuine PSU bank merger would actually be announced
A real consolidation cannot come into being through an unauthorised forward. It would need a formal process with the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India at the centre, plus the necessary parliamentary or regulatory clearances. Authentic announcements appear on the RBI website, the Finance Ministry's official channels and PIB releases — not as an image forwarded on WhatsApp.
How to verify such claims before sharing
- Check the PIB Fact Check handle (@PIBFactCheck) on X for a debunk or confirmation.
- Look for the announcement on rbi.org.in or the Finance Ministry's official site.
- Treat any "Gazette notification" received as a forward with suspicion; genuine Gazette documents are published on egazette.gov.in.
- Wait for coverage from multiple established news outlets before acting on or forwarding the claim.
Google Trends recorded roughly 500 searches for "psu bank merger" in India over 24 hours around 18–19 September 2026 — a sign of public curiosity, but search interest alone is not evidence that any merger is real or planned. As of the latest official clarification, no merger of the nine named banks has been proposed.
