A Generational Shift in India's Cheetah Reintroduction

The Project Cheetah initiative has reached a significant biological milestone as it transitions from relying on imported animals to establishing a self-sustaining, India-born population. On September 18, 2026, a female cheetah born in India, identified as KGP12, gave birth to four cubs at the कूनो राष्ट्रीय उद्यान (Kuno National Park) [1]. This birth occurred just one day after the project's fourth anniversary, serving as a critical indicator that the local environment is becoming suitable for the species' reproduction and long-term survival.

Current Population and Distribution

With the addition of these four cubs, the total number of living cheetahs in India has increased from 52 to 56 [3]. A key highlight of this growth is the rising proportion of India-born cheetahs, which has now reached 36 [1], suggesting that the second generation is beginning to outnumber the original imports.

Project Timeline and Import History

Since its inception on September 17, 2022, the project has expanded through three major import phases to ensure a diverse genetic pool:

• September 17, 2022: The journey began with 8 cheetahs brought from Namibia.
• February 2023: 12 additional cheetahs were introduced from South Africa.
• February 2026: 9 cheetahs arrived from Botswana to further diversify the population.

Future Goals and Conservation Challenges

Park management has set an ambitious target to increase the Kuno population from 49 to 80 cheetahs [2]. To reach this goal, officials are closely monitoring 10 females expected to produce cubs this year, including six from Botswana and two India-born females. This strategy aims to introduce new blood groups into the growing population.

However, the project has not been without setbacks. Over the past four years, 25 deaths have been recorded, comprising 9 foreign-born and 16 India-born cheetahs [2]. The ultimate success of the reintroduction effort now depends on the survival rates of the new cubs and their future capacity to breed in the wild.
