Who is Pragyan Ojha?
Pragyan Ojha is a former Indian left-arm spinner who represented India in 24 Test matches. He is best remembered as the hero of Sachin Tendulkar's historic 200th and final Test, where he took 10 wickets and won the man-of-the-match award (Navbharat Times). In the IPL, he played under Rohit Sharma's captaincy for Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. He became a national selector in September 2025, sitting on the panel alongside Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh.
Why he is interim chief selector now
Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chief selector officially ended on 4 October 2026. Agarkar, who took charge in 2023, did not seek an extension; under his watch India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. On 6 October 2026 the BCCI formally invited applications for the vacant seat on the men's senior selection committee, and Ojha was named interim chief selector to fill the gap (Aaj Tak). The BCCI has not clarified whether his role will be temporary or permanent, and until a new selector is appointed the five-member committee will function with four members.
Eligibility for the permanent post
According to the BCCI's release, applicants must have played at least 7 Tests or 30 first-class matches, with additional experience thresholds of 10 ODIs and 20 first-class games, and must have retired from cricket at least five years ago. The new member's duties include selecting teams across all three formats, strengthening bench strength and evaluating players during domestic and international matches.
Selection meeting and New Zealand tour
Ojha led the selection meeting held between 5 and 11 October 2026 — the BCCI confirmed a meeting at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on 6 October — to finalise the T20I, ODI and Test squads, plus the India A side, for the New Zealand tour beginning 22 October 2026 (Dainik Bhaskar). The tour comprises five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. The ODI leg matters most strategically: it feeds directly into preparations for the 2027 World Cup, which starts on 2 October 2027. Captain Shubman Gill has already indicated he wants first-choice players available, and pacers Akashdeep and Mukesh Kumar pushed their Test recall case with 14 wickets in the Irani Cup.
Why 'pragyan ojha' is trending
Google Trends India recorded 'pragyan ojha' as a trending term around 7 October 2026 with roughly 100 searches and 50% growth over 24 hours — a modest but real signal of curiosity about the little-discussed former spinner suddenly running India's selection. Note that Trends data confirms search interest only, not the underlying news itself.
