NPCI is the organisation behind many of India’s everyday digital payments—UPI, RuPay, BHIM, IMPS, AePS and BBPS. Searches for “npci” in India grew about 90% over the past 12 months, according to Google Trends data observed on 17 October 2026. That rise shows higher search interest only; it does not confirm a specific product launch, regulatory order, or earnings announcement. NPCI is a Section 8 company, meaning it operates as a non-profit entity under Indian company law.
What NPCI is and who owns it
NPCI stands for National Payments Corporation of India. It was incorporated on 19 December 2008 and registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) promoted it under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, to build a robust retail payments and settlement infrastructure in India. Its board includes nominees from the RBI and ten core promoter banks.
Products and services Indians use daily
NPCI operates several systems that touch daily transactions:
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI): real-time interbank transfers, integrated with more than 358 banks, available 24x7, including weekends and bank holidays. Consumers can use any UPI-supporting app to link bank accounts and generate a BHIM UPI PIN. Transfers can be initiated through a Virtual Payment Address (VPA), account number and IFSC, QR code, mobile number, or Aadhaar.
- RuPay: India’s domestic card scheme, accepted at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals and most online merchants.
- BHIM: a mobile app for UPI-based send-and-request payments using a mobile number or UPI ID.
- IMPS: immediate interbank payment service.
- AePS: Aadhaar-enabled basic banking through micro-ATMs.
- BBPS: one-stop bill payment ecosystem for electricity, telecom, DTH, gas and water bills.
BharatQR, FASTag/NETC and NUUP are also part of its portfolio. The BHIM app lets anyone with a bank account, registered mobile number and debit card send money to friends, relatives or merchants using a VPA or UPI QR.
Reported FY2025-26 earnings
Wikipedia lists NPCI’s FY2025-26 revenue at ₹39.69 billion and net income at ₹13.62 billion (₹1,362 crore). A Moneycontrol-derived report dated 11 September 2026 said FY26 net profit fell 12% to ₹1,362 crore while revenue rose 21% to roughly ₹4,000 crore. The revenue figure of ₹39.69 billion is roughly ₹3,969 crore, while the Moneycontrol-derived report cites about ₹4,000 crore. What the search trend means—and what it does not
Google Trends labelled “npci” as “rising” in India with approximately 90% growth over the past 12 months, observed on 17 October 2026. Trends data is normalised search activity, not website traffic or proof of a news event. No fetched source confirms why searches increased, so this explainer does not assign a trigger such as a new rule, app launch, or policy change. Search interest can rise for many reasons, including general curiosity, exam-related queries, or media coverage, none of which are confirmed by the available sources.
