What Karnataka’s First Drought Relief Package Looks Like
On 7 October 2026 the Karnataka government released the first tranche of its drought‑relief plan, amounting to ₹1,250 crore. The money is earmarked for farmers in the 217 taluks that have already been declared drought‑affected, with an additional 23 taluks still under field verification and the possibility of adding 10–15 more soon.
The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara in Hosapete, where he highlighted the immediate need to cushion the impact of the severe dry spell that has battered the state for months.
How Farmers Will Receive the Aid
Eligible farmers will receive a per‑acre compensation of ₹2,500 in the first installment. The state has assured that the amount will be credited directly to bank accounts within 2–3 days, following the prescribed norms.
In addition to the per‑acre payout, the state has already spent ₹306 crore on drinking‑water supply and ₹329 crore in district collector personal‑deposit accounts for emergency works. A further ₹25 crore has been released for fodder management and the opening of animal banks where required.
Central Funding and Opposition Debate
While the ₹1,250 crore tranche is a significant step, Karnataka estimates the crop and asset losses at ₹50,000–60,000 crore. To bridge the gap, the state has requested roughly ₹10,000–11,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
Opposition leader B.Y. Vijayendra has demanded a per‑acre payout of ₹50,000, arguing that the current ₹2,500 is insufficient. A bipartisan delegation is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Agriculture Minister in New Delhi to discuss the matter.
What’s Next for the State
Central disaster assessment teams have already visited various parts of Karnataka and are expected to submit their report soon. The final relief amount will depend on the central assessment and the NDRF disbursement schedule.
Meanwhile, the state’s agriculture minister, P.M. Narendraswamy, is set to submit a memorandum to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeking interim relief while the assessment is underway.
Google Trends data shows the term ಬರ trending in India with an approximate 2,000 searches and a 100% growth rate in the past 24 hours, reflecting the public’s heightened interest in the state’s drought situation.
