On 9 October 2026, Google Trends India recorded a spike in searches for aajtak, logging roughly 1,000 approximate searches and 75% growth in the past 24 hours (Google Trends). The surge followed an AajTak report dated 8 October 2026 that covered Reliance Jio's satellite internet plans and Elon Musk's criticism of Starlink's delayed India launch. Google Trends data reflects search interest only; it does not measure news accuracy or website traffic.
Jio's 1,600-Satellite Plan at India Mobile Congress 2026
According to the AajTak report, Reliance Jio used the India Mobile Congress 2026 to outline a large satellite connectivity vision. The company said it plans to build a network of approximately 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and establish 23 ground stations across India. Jio's stated target is to extend connectivity to more than six lakh villages, remote islands, and border areas, with direct-to-device calling included in the roadmap (AajTak). This remains an announcement, not a launched commercial service.
Starlink's Delay and Musk's Reaction
The same AajTak article noted that Starlink has been trying to enter India for nearly five years. Despite holding a GMPCS licence and receiving IN-SPACe approval, along with building around 20 gateway sites and installing hundreds of antennas, the company has not yet received final commercial clearance. Elon Musk publicly questioned the delay, asking on X whether Ambani is the "real boss of India." The Indian government responded that its satellite communication policy is fair and non-discriminatory, and that Starlink, Jio Satcom, and Eutelsat OneWeb are all subject to the same security clearance process (AajTak).
Indigenous Satellite Stack and Pre-6G Patents
A parallel report by Amar Ujala on 8 October 2026 added that Jio is developing an indigenous (स्वदेशी) satellite technology stack within India. The company has also begun filing patents for pre-6G technology and is working on AI-based voice and data services. Akash Ambani said Jio wants to strengthen India's own satellite communication capabilities and contribute to 6G research before commercial 6G arrives (Amar Ujala).
What Is Confirmed vs What Is Pending
As of the 8 October 2026 reports, neither Jio's satellite network nor Starlink's India service is commercially available. Jio's 1,600-satellite deployment is a stated plan, and Starlink's launch is still awaiting regulatory approval. The Google Trends spike for aajtak on 9 October 2026 shows heightened public interest in the coverage, but it does not confirm any new service launch or approval.
