WebDriver timeout enforcement and command cancellation behavior

Selenium WebDriver provides several timeout configurations, including pageLoadTimeout, scriptTimeout, and implicit waits. These settings are designed to prevent tests from hanging indefinitely by enforcing deadlines on the remote end of the connection.
A challenge arises when a client-side thread is interrupted or a WebDriverWait deadline is reached while a command—such as a navigation request or a complex JavaScript execution—is already in flight. Because the WebDriver protocol does not define a standardized abort contract, it is unclear if the browser driver continues the operation to completion despite the client no longer listening for the response.
This creates uncertainty regarding session stability and resource consumption in Selenium Grid environments where network latency is present.
- Does interrupting a client thread reliably signal the browser driver to abort an active operation?
- Which specific timeout configurations ensure that the browser stops processing a request rather than just timing out the client response?
