Trello Webhooks and External Schema Synchronization

Webhook Payload Consistency
Trello webhooks deliver real-time JSON notifications for board and card changes. When custom fields are modified—such as renaming a field or changing its type—the resulting webhook payloads immediately reflect the updated schema. Because these payloads are not versioned, downstream integration systems must manage the transition between the old and new data structures without a formal migration event or schema-diff notification.
Integration Constraints
While custom field option IDs remain stable, the display strings and field definitions are mutable. Relying solely on webhook payloads for state management introduces a risk of data divergence, as there is no native dead-letter queue or replay mechanism to handle payloads that arrive during a schema transition. Reconciling state via the REST API is the documented approach, but this introduces potential rate-limiting challenges during bulk updates.
Technical Uncertainties
- What is the most reliable method for detecting schema drift in custom fields when the webhook payload does not explicitly signal a definition change?
- How can an integration maintain data integrity for in-flight payloads that were generated under a previous schema but processed after a field modification?
