RubyMine Indexing: Distinguishing Stale Caches from SDK Configuration Errors

Index Staleness vs. Environment Configuration
RubyMine relies on internal indexes of project files, gems, and SDKs to power code completion, navigation, and symbol search. When these indexes become stale—often following major branch switches or external gem updates—the IDE may report missing symbols or provide outdated search results despite the code being correct on disk.
The standard remedy is File > Invalidate Caches / Restart. However, this process is time-consuming for large Rails projects and involves a critical decision regarding whether to clear Local History, which is an irreversible action.
There is currently no automated indicator within the IDE to determine if a missing symbol is the result of a stale index or a genuine Ruby SDK misconfiguration. This creates uncertainty when deciding whether to trigger a full re-index or to troubleshoot the gem environment.
Technical Questions
- What specific indicators can differentiate a stale index from an incorrectly configured Ruby SDK?
- Is there a way to target the invalidation of specific gem indexes without clearing the entire project cache?
