Configuration must be available to the application without exposing credentials in source control, logs or browser code. What belongs in the runtime and which access controls matter?

Validate environment variables at startup and keep secrets server-side. Treat package lifecycle scripts as executable code with the privileges of the installer. Scope runtime credentials and do not expose server configuration through frontend build-time substitution.
